At Nestlé Waters, we are pioneering new sciences for packaging that is innovative, 100% sustainable and made from recycled or renewable sources.

Preserving environment


Already our PET (polyethylene terephthalate) bottles are 100% recyclable by design. Year-on-year, thanks to recycling, we are increasing the amount of recycled PET (rPET) in our bottles. Our future is continuing to close the loop on PET bottles, new advances in bio-based PET, new enzyme recycling technologies and alternative delivery formats.

Most importantly, we know to reach our broader vision for a waste-free future, we all need to act now to ensure zero packaging (including plastics) ends up in landfill or as litter in our oceans, lakes and rivers – and more packaging gets recycled. We need to innovate and act #TogetherForCircularity!

Aiming high on recycled pet

By 2025

By 2025, our goal is an average of 50% recycled PET content in all our plastic bottles.

Currently, 100% rPET in bottles is only feasible at small scale and we need to source more high-quality food-grade recycled PET to increase its use in our bottles – but we have achieved this for select brands.

Unlocking the full potential of PET bottles is a two-fold action plan: 1) Boosting PET bottle collection and recycling rates 2) Investing in innovative PET recycling solutions.


Improving our PET bottles

Our packaging research and design team systematically applies recyclable-by-design principles and conducts life-cycle analyses to continually improve our PET bottles. As a result, in the last fifteen years, we have reduced the quantity of PET needed for each liter of bottled water we produce by 22%.

We are convinced that increasing the amount of recycled PET in our plastic bottles (as well as continuing to reduce the amount of PET needed) can improve our overall environmental performance.

Our research into bio-based PET also plays an important role. We focus on renewable plant-based raw materials that do not impact existing animal and human food production.

1 - Achieving 100% rPET bottles

Nestlé Pure Life Purified Water, the world's leading bottled water brand, has not been left behind in the 100% rPET revolution.

Offering a 700cl bottle from 100% rPET has seen the brand recognized by the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI) – naming Nestlé Waters North America as its 2019 Design for Recycling (DFR) Award winner.

Judged on the innovative use of recycled plastic and product design centered on recycling, the DFR Award is ISRI’s most prestigious award.

The new Nestlé Pure Life 100% rPET bottle solves end-of-life issues in recycling by featuring a pressure-sensitive label that releases easily during the wash stage of the recycling process – making it easier and faster to recycle.

The kids are not forgotten in the 100% rPET revolution, after all, they are the future. Nestlé® Pure Life "DC Collection" bottles are 100% rPET 330mL bottles, which feature four popular DC characters - Batman, Wonder Woman, Superman and Shazam.

A fun Super Hero 100% rPET bottle that encourages kids to hydrate and lets them beam their hero on the wall by shining a flashlight through the bottle.

Poland Spring is pushing to be the first major bottled water brand in the U.S. to be 100% rPET across its entire portfolio by 2022. Already the premium offering, ORIGIN, comes in a 100% rPET 900cl bottle and Poland Spring 1-liter bottle has joined it in the 100% rPET revolution.

France has its first 100% rPET water bottle thanks to Vittel. In a new version of its 75cl bottle, Vittel has pioneered a new 100% rPET bottle made from 100% sorted and recycled bottles.


With a 75cl and 1 litre bottle made from 100% recycled PET plastic, Buxton Natural Mineral Water is leading our efforts in the UK to increase our use of rPET.

By 2021, the entire range of Buxton bottles will be made of 100% rPET. This bold move accelerates our ambition to promote a circular economy.


In a first for the brand, and a European first for Nestlé Waters, Valvert our Belgian natural mineral water brand has launched a new bottle made entirely from recycled plastic (rPET).

The 100% rPET 1.5-litre bottle is a gamechanger for the brand and also opens the way to transition the 50cl bottle to 100% rPET in the near future.


2 - Using 30% vegetable-origin plastic

Levissima has pioneered an environmentally friendly bottle made from 30% vegetable-origin plastic – a solution for anyone seeking a more conscious consumption.

We offer many different packaging formats and materials: plastic, aluminum, glass, plus small and large formats depending on purpose and functionality.

Globally, PET and rPET are used in 80% of our packaging.

For regions where infrastructure means low collection and recycling rates (i.e. Asia and Africa), we promote the sale of returnable packaging – up to 40% of our total product in some regions.


ReadyRefresh delivery solutions


Ready Refresh is our US-based, five-gallon large format, home or office returnable water solution. We deliver the Ready Refresh compact water dispenser and returnable plastic bottles to businesses and homes who prefer our six brand offerings as their choice of hydration: Perrier®, Nestlé® Splash, Nestlé® Pure Life®, Acqua Panna® and S.Pellegrino®

Perrier and Flexikeg packaging


Perrier has launched The Next Packaging Movement a sustainable innovation program to enable leading innovators, experts and changemakers to collaborate around packaging solutions. Flexikeg (low-impact recyclable keg) is one of the first three winners and aims to be market ready by 2025.

As a co-founder of the NaturAll Bottle Alliance we are accelerating the development of innovative packaging solutions and diverting impact from natural resources and agriculture land is the goal.



Perrier has launched The Next Packaging Movement, a sustainable innovation program to enable leading innovators, experts and changemakers to collaborate around packaging solutions. Biotic – one of three winners – operates in Africa producing bio-based and biodegradable plastic from agricultural waste, and at the same time creating well-paying jobs for women in the region.
