the Upcycling Factory: Let’s recycle more together
The Facebook page "The Upcycling Factory" aims at highlighting the social benefits of recycling. It gathers educational information on PET which is a 100% recyclable material:
- An application to get the best of your friends by Upcycling them to useful items
- Best practices from recycling initiatives from around the world will enrich the facebook page
Message in the bottle: "full it's good for you, empty it's a resource"
Bottles of water are far more than plastic bottles: full of good water before being emptied, they can be recycled into many useful objects after use.
R-PET* is used in many different industries, including:
- Textiles (clothing, carpets, filling for duvets and pillows)
- Building materials (insulation, flooring)
- Car industry (plastic, filling for seats, baby seats)
- Furniture (seating, bins, benches)
*Most plastic bottles are made of PET (PolyEthylene Terephtalate), a resin from the polyester family. PET is 100% recyclable and transforms into what is called recycled PET, or r-PET.
Why do Nestlé Waters convey this message?
As a major player in the bottled water industry, Nestlé Waters recognizes that the use and recycling of PET is a core area of responsibility of our company.
About one third of PET bottles are recycled in the USA and one half in Europe. Yet, the supply of recycled PET bottles is not enough to cover the growing industrial demand in r-PET. This is the reason why Nestlé Waters considers as a priority to increase collection rates of PET bottles in order to increase r-PET availability. At the prompting of Nestlé Waters subsidiaries worldwide, Multiple PET bottle collection initiatives have arisen during the past few year.
Nestlé Waters has reduced by 20% the average weight of packaging materials used in its bottles between 2005 and 2010 and since 2005, PET producers have considerably improved the environmental performances of PET resin production.
As a result, Nestlé Waters has continuously optimized the environmental performances of its packaging: Today, the packaging used for one liter produced by Nestlé Waters generates 37% fewer greenhouse gases emissions than in 2005.
We can do better. Let’s recycle more together. Nestlé Waters wants to encourage any collective or individual recycling actions. The aim of this Facebook page is to highlight examples of good practices via content posting like videos or photos.
