Protecting Water Sources

Nestlé Waters works for the environment with the help of a pioneering environmental community initiative to protect the natural sources of its mineral water brands in France.

In 1992, our company set up the dedicated subsidiary Agrivair to bring together farmers, businesses, local authorities, tourist organisations, charities, horticulturalists and residents to ensure the quality and purity of our brands Vittel®, Contrex® and Hépar®.

Zero pesticides approach

For a quarter of a century, Agrivair has helped to improve and protect the quality of soil and biodiversity in the Vosges region, while implementing a zero pesticides policy.

One way it has been doing this is by sourcing land and making it freely available to farmers, providing free composting, manure-spreading services and offering advice on technology and financing for agricultural development.

Other measures include encouraging farmers to no longer use pesticides and limiting the cattle population to one cow per hectare of land while maintaining net income.

Forming multi partnerships

Agrivair, which covers about 10,000 hectares of land, is a unique and exemplary model that demonstrates our commitment to the community and a more sustainable way of working.

Our efforts to protect water resources dates back to the 1980s, when we launched a research programme with the National Agronomic Research Institute (INRA).

We have increased our partnerships over the years by relaunching this programme with INRA in 2015 and teamed up with the Vosges Chamber of Agriculture and the National Forests Office. We have also extended our zero pesticide approach with the Vittel Ermitage Golf Club, which in turn, was awarded the prestigious Golf Environment Organization certified label.

Since 2016, we have also been sharing our expertise with other regions to protect the sources of Vergèze in France for Perrier® and Étalle in Belgium for Valvert®.
