This year sees the brand credited with popularizing mineral water consumption in Switzerland celebrates its tenth anniversary as part of our company.
Henniez has been sold since 1905, but it wasn’t until 1 January 2008 that the business became part of the Nestlé Waters family.
The most popular drinking water in Switzerland, for many years ordering a “Henniez” in a restaurant was a simple way of ordering mineral water.
The entrepreneur behind the brand’s success was a man named Edgar Rouge, who believed that in order to expand, you must diversify.
As well as adding mineral water and fruit juice brands such Cristalp, Granini and Hohes C to the portfolio over the years, Rouge’s entrepreneurial vision extended to environmental conservation.
In 1991 he created a protected zone around the Henniez spring, planting 70,000 trees to preserve water quality and banning the use of fertilisers, pesticides and other phytosanitary products.
After Nestlé Waters took over Henniez in 2008, we reaffirmed our commitment to environmental sustainability, launching our own ‘ECO-Broye’ programme to strengthen and expand existing initiatives for water and natural resources conservation in the region.
In 2016, Nestlé Waters & energy provider Groupe E Greenwatt opened Switzerland’s largest agricultural biogas plant next to the Henniez bottling factory. It takes in natural fertiliser from roughly 25 farms in the region, well as organic waste from producing and recycling Nespresso and Nescafé, and converts it into biogas.
This not only generates enough electricity to meet the needs of almost 1,000 households, it also produces high-quality organic fertiliser, which is given to participating farmers in exchange for the manure they’ve not spread on the fields.
Working together with 70 farmers, local authorities and communities, as well as other stakeholders, we’re proud to continue the Henniez tradition of actively protecting water resources throughout the region.
