Nestlé Waters’ Brazilian brand São Lourenço has renewed a highly original partnership with the city authorities, to offer locals and visitors a Christmas season that is festive, spectacular ... and sustainable.
For the second year running, the São Lourenço brand has invited female artisans from ASTA, a Rio-based non-profit organization, to create Christmas decorations for the city of São Lourenço’s Water Park and for the Nestlé headquarters in São Paulo.
The decorations include Christmas trees, sleighs, wreaths and all sorts of hanging ornaments. Their common point? All of them were made from recyclable Nestlé materials, which the artisans have converted into decorations, using both traditional methods and new techniques that they will now be able to apply to their future creative projects. This year an impressive total of 15,000 São Lourenço and 500 Nestlé Pure Life PET bottles, 25 meters of Nestea® Tetrapak packages and 1,600 thousand Nescafé® Dolce Gusto® capsules were used in the Sustainable Christmas project.
The São Lourenço brand also organized a series of three workshops for 60 teachers from the city’s schools, focusing on how recyclable materials can be used to make gifts, ornaments and toys. The teachers were then able to pass the techniques on to their own students, and as a result a number of local schools have made their own Christmas decorations for the first time.
The Sustainable Christmas project provides a stirring example of Nestlé Waters’ strategy to share value with the local community in which it operates, in this case both by making young people in São Lourenço aware of recycling and reuse of materials, and by helping local craftspeople to display and extend their skills. The São Lourenço brand also advertised the initiative extensively, with the aim of attracting visitors for year-end vacations to a city where tourism is the leading economic activity, and which is renowned for its natural beauty and for the therapeutic qualities of its mineral waters.
