Arrowhead® Mountain Spring Water Team Celebrates Century Milestone in Los Angeles

May 3, 2017

100 years of continuous operation and community service

When the Arrowhead bottling facility opened in 1917, the facility was “one of the largest establishments of its kind in the West,” according to The Los Angeles Times. The original factory which is still in operation today, shares the location with the local ReadyRefreshSM home and office delivery branch, and employs a workforce of more than 150 employees, with four of whom are among the most tenured employees at Nestlé Waters North America, with more than 178 years of combined service.

A historic source of spring water sustained for more than a century

Before construction of the factory, water collected from the Arrowhead Springs water was bottled in the basement of the historic Arrowhead Springs Hotel, near its source in the San Bernardino Mountains. From there, it was shipped to customers in five-gallon glass bottles via the Pacific Electric Railway. After the Los Angeles factory opened in 1917, the increasingly popular spring water was transported in glass-lined railroad tank cars to the factory, where it was bottled and distributed throughout the region.Arrowhead anniversary facts

Water stewardship to protect the environment

Today Arrowhead’s team of biologists, hydrologists, geologists and local engineers monitor and care for the natural water source in the San Bernardino Mountains to ensure its sustainability into the future. For over two decades, we have partnered with the Southern California Mountains Foundation, supporting hundreds of restoration projects in the San Bernardino and Angeles National Forests. The bottles themselves are part of our environmental commitment: today 9 out of 10 Arrowhead bottles made in California contain 50% recycled plastic. 100 years after the construction of the Los Angeles bottling facility, we are proud that Arrowhead® Mountain Spring Water is the number one selling brand of bottled water in Los Angeles.*

A landmark manufacturing facility in Los Angeles

During the celebration, held on 29 April, honoring the facility's century of continuous operation, Tara Carraro, Executive Vice President & Chief Corporate Affairs Officer at Nestlé Waters North America, said “It is an honor to have been a part of the Los Angeles community for the past 100 years. Although much has changed over the past century, the pride our staff takes in bottling this precious resource, and their commitment to the local community, have been unwavering.”
